Department of Korean Language and Literature


Graduate Program

The objective of the program is to train the students to be expertize in Korean affairs, so as to learn to make the policy when deal with Korean affairs.

First, students would take Korean language and literature as the first study field in order to expand the study field to the Korean politics, history, diplomacy, economics, trade, etc. For the long term objective, we hope to develop the students to be the experts in Korean affairs.

Graduates will be graduated the degree as master of literature.

The program sets up the courses of aspects in language and literature for students to take according to their study field.
A. Language Field
In order to let graduate students promote deeply understanding of Korean language, courses in researching phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics etc. have been set up for students to select.
Korean has the initial name as the documents that express the objective of creating Korean language. The language became flourishing after Korean character invention when people translate Chinese works and Buddhist scriptures into Korean.
Proverb and slang are included in semantics. Custom, ideology, value are also included.
Language in North and South Korea had grown in different system due to the division. Pronunciation, phonology, word usage, semantics, and Chinese characters in Korean are subjects for research.
B. Literature Field
Masterpieces of poetry, classics, novels, prose will be introduced. Students would study comparative literature in Chinese and Korean literature.

Course feature
Students will take at least 30 credits to graduate themselves from this program. Master English in the first year is the only one required course. Students could take other selective courses according to their research. Graduate students could choose to study abroad for one semester or one year. 8 credits at Korean University are taken as credits for graduation credits.
